Work Experience

Optimyze - Xylem Inc

The optimyze™ modular condition monitoring solution provides health guidance and predictive maintenance advice for rotating and fixed assets such as pumps and motors. It periodically monitors system vibration and temperature and allows everyday users to access simple-to-use monitoring tools from iOS or Android mobile devices.

Project Overview

Optimyze is a mobile app used by industrial workers as a monitoring solution. Pumps and motors, among other rotating and fixed assets, are provided with health guidance and predictive maintenance advice. As part of its operation, it is connected to a sensor named optimyze that collects data and performs calculations.

My Role

The only UX & UI designer in the team, I gathered requirements, performed PoCs, designed services/flows, conducted User Testing, & updated the company's design system named Gravity.

Project Goals

From Designers POV: Enhance user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure associated with solutions in a way that is attractive & convenient for enterprise users.

From Project Owners POV: Know the current health and historical trends of assets to perform preventative maintenance before problems arise.

Project Execution

The whole ecosystem of Optimyze consists of A sensor device which collects and stores data plus a mobile device which receives that data to provide meaningful insights. The goal was to build a mobile-first application quickly and to reduce costs and effort, we decided to go for a hybrid approach, i.e. a Xamarian forms-based application that could be developed once and used by Android and iOS users alike.

Strategize

Prior to my arrival at Xylem, another Designer was working on the project. Unfortunately, the product was fragmented and was left in the middle, and it wasn't scalable. I wanted to understand what actually happened wrong, and through talking to several folks across the business who had interactions with the previous effort, I learned that the main issue was that the effort was too grandiose — they tried to boil the ocean.

As a result, I knew I had to be very strategic about how we would begin working on updated designs based on the existing ones. It was essential that I kept in mind the existing design system.

There were a lot of backlog items to look after. We prioritized features based on their importance. As a result, the team voted to decide what epics to tackle first.

Over the course of the next several months, we worked in design sprints taking each pending feature and organically building out our product. Meanwhile, we made sure to demonstrate and take feedback at every opportunity. We wanted to deliver quickly or fail fast.

The benefits were evident and we were able to finally call our idea a hybrid mobile application.

Concepts & Prototypes

During each quarter, all stakeholders, including Project Owners, Developers, and Designers would sit down and decide what features to design and build next. After that, we would divide the Epics into User stories to work on in Agile sprints.

It was sometimes necessary to do POCs with the development team as designers to determine the feasibility of a feature. My engineering background helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the problems by learning about water pumps, centrifugal pumps, HQ curves, etc. I had to do my homework learning about the math and science involved in using the product.

Eventually, we incorporated quite a few features into our kitty, including:Monitoring the health of mechanical and electrical assets through predictive maintenance. An asset management system that includes asset location, size, and manufacturing date. System transparency that optimizes reliability.Improved reporting to simplify documentation, manage maintenance, and inform purchasing decisions.

We covered the following salient features:

• Monitoring the vibration of pumps and motors.

• Monitoring the temperature of pump bearings.

• Monitoring the temperature of motors to prevent overheating and winding damage.

Outcome

Most of the features that were intended to be used with the Optimyze device were designed and built by us. It is currently possible to predict any downtime of an asset using monitoring and predictive data. This is a savings of millions of dollars. To calculate this, we do not yet have any KPIs defined.

The majority of its users are from the Middle East, Europe, and North America. As this is a B2B app, we don't expect this to be deployed on millions of devices. However, we can't deny that we want to scale this app and integrate it with other sensors. In the future, the team plans to add new features and scale them to other parts of the world.
